Click image for the full project outline. Totally about bringing back forgotten, un-used spaces and I bet there's tonnes of lingering spots in NYC that deserve a reprise, much like London and so many other UK towns.liz mundanehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09476282471779742668noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980425904975628984.post-64954779294462722812010-05-31T09:21:00.000-07:002010-06-01T05:07:05.305-07:00The Bike Man
Saw this on my walk on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge, this bike, completely overtaken by the surrounding foliage. But wayward plants, whether common weeds, domestic breeds or rare botanical specimens, are truly in the eye of the beholder. The Wayward Plant Registry sets up Halfway Homes for these unwanted plants, and works to bring out the full potential of their beauty and meaning. Picture your counters/work tops/shelves filled with not items for sale but t.v's - As many as we can get, old, new, b+w or colour. They show the images of the items once sitting there, flickering screens on loop of inanimate life. Spooky.
Trapped utopia. Mini Eden projects. A garden stuck indoors. Plants. Bench. Grass. > Contained in shop. Why not make every empty shop into a courtyard or urban park? Turning commercialisation inside out, more "gardens" will pop up just as shops are known to. Lead on to inviting people to rest, or eat lunch in our closed-off nirvana. Create a real, live, growing shop display: invite allotment enthusiasts and guerilla gardeners to contribute. National Trust's - Country air in a jar. Once peered into a kaleidoscope of images made from your face is seen. Use of CCTV or poor man's version to document the shapes and patterns. Then add to your interior to act as more image (but this time moving) for kaleidoscope, keep building until really nauseating. Will require mirrors and some engineering brain power.
This doesn't require access into a premise. Write and post as many letters to a shop until the place fills up. I always notice an empty place by the piles of mail on the floor. The idea of being away too long. How many posted DL envelopes will it take to fill. A couple of years ago I was looking into photography for an FL shoot, I had these stored away - two images below by Schohaja Staffler - which resurfaced the other day. The reason these are so pleasing to me are because of the old trick of displacing objects, the inside outside etc. Can we bypass the issue of even obtaining a shop by creating the inside of the shop outdoors and the window is our mirror in...! The clever chaps had decided to promote a festive shopping experience by encouraging magical pop up stores. Although still going strong during the day, Brixton undercover market has also been experiencing some problems of late and a higher percentage of shops and units have been left unused and empty. This scheme enabled start up companies, or artists and designers to promote their work and create a shop environment for networking and potential customers. Interesting stuff.

{Documented in pics by Sandra D.}

We then headed off to the pub for some brain work.

Fickle Street Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06712234264462349360noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980425904975628984.post-3860609984105126822009-12-13T12:56:00.000-08:002009-12-16T09:36:04.327-08:00Home is where the pub is...
image from flickr

Friday night I went to Designersblock hq/home/pub and it was one of those 'yeah! a shop doesn't have to be/look like a shop' moment just as this pub is now (soon to be demolished) a place for all kinds of events, mostly a venue for parties and exhibits. This does not explain just what we are planning to exhibit but hopefully should offer inspiration as some of these shops have a very interesting past and the type of things they used to sell where quite specific and unique or part of a long gone era We would like this to be the inspiring brief for the Fickle Street Project but without being nostalgic about the past Fickle Street Projecthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06712234264462349360noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980425904975628984.post-43432063219840659062009-11-27T05:09:00.000-08:002009-11-27T08:40:35.638-08:00IDEA #1 Shop Sitting?I like the idea of people shop-sitting like they do when a house is left empty.
